AP English Language & Composition

 1360 AP English Language and Composition

Recommended Preparation: Course contract signed by student, parent/guardian, and current English teacher. A score of “Advanced” on the California State Standards Test (CST). Priority acceptance given to students with highest grades in English 10 Accelerated, highest scores on the CST, and teacher recommendations. Summer reading is required.

The AP English Language and Composition Course is a college-level writing class that will prepare students for the AP English Language and Composition exam offered in May.  Students enrolled in this class will have the opportunity to apply rhetorical principles in crafting academic essays that will include expository, narrative, and argumentative writing.  In addition, the course is designed to help students become skilled readers of prose written in a variety of contexts and to become skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes.  Readings will be clustered thematically and will include interpretation of nonfiction, fiction, documentary film, and visual images. Thematic units may include education, nature, community, gender, language, science and technology, popular culture, and politics.  Additional emphasis will be given to grammar, rhetoric, style, and vocabulary.  Lastly, the informed use of research materials and the ability to synthesize varied sources (to evaluate, use, and cite sources) are integral parts of this course.
