2008-2009-You are to complete the following 4 assignments over the summer as a prerequisite for AP Studio Art. These assignments will be due the first day of class. They will constitute 50 percent of your first four-weeks grade. All pieces are to be no smaller than 12” x 16” . Incomplete or unfinished projects will risk you from being dropped from the class. If you need supplies, please see me before the end of the school year.
Do a self-portrait that expresses a specific mood. Think about the effects of color and how its use can help to convey the individual mood. You might want to do several studies, each reflecting different moods. Try using a colored bulb to enhance the effects of how different lighting conditions can alter a scene. Consider using different color harmonies such as analogous colors, complementary colors, split complementary colors etc…You may choose to do a full bodied self portrait or an up close partial head shot. Remember the rules of proportions. You may also create this piece in the style of another artist to help you attain different techniques (ie: study Picasso's cubism portraits, Renoir's impressionist portraits, Chuck Close's (his later years blow up) portraits, Dali's surrealist portraits, etc…)
Do a graphite drawing, chalk pastel, or charcoal drawing of a still life arrangement that consists of reflective objects-your goal is to convey a convincing representation with a full range of values. To add interest to the composition you may also want to render yourself being reflected in the objects.
Do a drawing of an unusual interior, for instance, looking inside a closet, cabinet, and refrigerator, your car…use your imagination and use intriguing perspectives (ie: two-point perspective views, three-point perspective views, fish-eye lens effects, etc…). You can photograph the scene and use a computer program to help you distort your perspective if interested.
Do a color rendering of a still-life arrangement consisting of your family members shoes-try to convey some “sense” of each of your family members personalities in your piece.
